If we consult Arabic dictionaries, we find that “rukun” means tendency and inaction. Al-Zamakhshari understood “rukun” here to mean «الميلُ اليسيرُ» “a facilitating tendency.” Al-Qurtubi said, «الرُّكونُ حقيقتُه الاستنادُ والاعتمادُ، والسكونُ إلى الشيءِ والرِّضى به» “The literal meaning of “rukun” is leaning and relying, and inaction and content with something.”
