Comment:
President Donald Trump has publicly suggested that Syria's Ahmad al-Sharaa would be more effective than the Zionist entity at combating Hezbollah in Lebanon. Trump has criticized the Zionist entity's military campaign against Hezbollah for causing heavy casualties and dragging on too long, arguing that Syrian forces could potentially handle the threat more precisely. However, it remains unclear whether the White House is seriously pursuing this idea.
Syria has strongly denied any intention of intervening “militarily” in Lebanon. Ahmed al-Sharaa stated that Trump's remarks were misunderstood. However, that does not mean he may not intervene in a different capacity. Al-Sharaa earlier told Al-Mashhad that “the decision of Hezbollah to enter into the Syrian conflict was wrong,” but that he was willing to hold a “dialogue” with the militant group and even to mediate between different Lebanese factions as they debate the future of Hezbollah's weapons. These statements clearly show his willingness to offer his services to fulfill U.S. ambitions in the region.
Trump's remarks were notable not only for their substance but also for the political context in which they were made. Trump is well aware of the influence Washington retains over Ahmad al-Sharaa and his administration. His statement was not a casual suggestion. Rather, it was intended to test regional reactions or to exert pressure on Damascus to assume a greater role in addressing Hezbollah's presence in Lebanon. The statement underscores America’s considerable leverage over Syria's leadership, in a tone one would use with a subordinate, a proxy, or a puppet. The statement also emphasizes how easy it is for America to set Muslims against each other. All it takes is a proxy, a few words, and a sectarian spark.
When the U.S. pushes Syria into confronting Hezbollah, it is scrambling the board, rummaging through its toolbox looking for a fix, and draining the region of whatever strength it has left. This is the oldest trick in the imperial playbook, which is to divide, delegate, and destroy. And it works every time, because as long as Muslims are busy fighting each other, they are too distracted to confront the real enemy, while America minimizes its own losses and those of its precious allies.
The path forward for the Muslim Ummah is clear. We must cast aside the sectarian, nationalistic, and political divisions that have been sown among us and reject all forms of foreign meddling that seek to weaken and exploit us. We must confront our enemy as one, rather than allowing them to pit us against one another and further cheapen our blood and weaken our resolve. Only a Khilafah (Caliphate) can ensure that these divides are eliminated and that our collective potential is truly realized.
“And obey Allah and His Messenger and do not dispute with one another, lest you lose courage and your strength depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.” [TMQ Al-Anfal: 46]
